Friends of the rainwater basins
We have set up an account for donations with the Nebraska Community Foundation. There will be no management fee and 100% of all donated dollars will go directly to pumping water for the rainwater basins. In addition several agencies, DU, USFWS, NGPC and other grants have offered to match any funds raised to start an endowment fund. The hope is that the endowment fund will grow and become a self sustaining source of funds for future basin related projects.
Quick Overview of current pumping plans.
The USFWS focuses their pumping plan for the spring migration. Most of the dollars spent pumping goes towards water for spring migrations.
The NGPC does a lot more fall pumping to create more hunting opportunities.
Goal of friends of the Rainwater basins
WE would like to see the proceeds from our fundraising go directly towards creating more fall hunting opportunities. The USFWS and the NGPC is in agreement with our plans. We would like to see one marsh full rather than the money spread around and have nothing to show for it. How much money we can raise for pumping will be the key. Wells generally range from 20-80 dollars a day to run.
Where and when to pump will be determined by the USFWS and the NGPC in conjunction with their current management plans. Each agency will give us 3 marshes that would be the best candidates for fall pumping. There will be many factors that determine where and when the pumping will begin. Factors will be the amount of money available for pumping, weather, and site conditions. Some years pumping for early Teal season will be a viable option and some years it won’t. The best time to pump is after the first killing frost to reduce water loss through evapo transpiration from plants. The USFWS listed their target marshes as Harvard, Johnson Clark and Cotonwood.. These marshes all have electric submersible pumps and require the least maintenance to operate.
Any money donated will be treated as bonus funds and will not replace any of the current dollars spent for pumping. The current pumping budget for the USFWS and the NGPC combined is around $50,000
If you want water and more hunting opportunities this fall now is the time to act. The more money we can raise the more water will be pumped. Please send Donations to
